This exciting survey was conducted at TU Delft using their Ring of Fire measurement system.
In this experiment thousands of bubbles filled with helium were illuminated with strong light to visualize the flow field around moving skaters.
With this method, it is possible to measure the exact air resistance of various postures during skating and therefore differences between skating with one arm behind the back or with the arm swinging free can be observed.

Helium-filled Soap Bubble (HFSB) Generator
The LaVision Helium-filled Soap Bubble (HFSB) Generator is designed to generate soap bubbles at an extremely high rate as a seeding material for flow visualization, mainly for large scale volumetric particle image velocimetry measurements.
Its new nozzle design enables up to 50 nozzles in parallel and 2 Mio bubbles per second. A micro-processor inside the controller device automatically manages the air, helium and soap flow rates with start, stop and pause modes.
