LaVision Biotec Ultramicroscope

The LaVision Biotec Ultra-microscope represents an entirely new class of imaging system, created by combining pioneering ideas from the last century with today's technical concepts. It offers exceptional new opportunities for: :

  • Whole brain imaging at cellular resolution
  • 3D high speed imaging without bleaching
  • High throughput phenotype screening.

The Ultramicroscope can handle samples of even a centimetre in size, yet with sub-cellular resolution. Based on a technique originally developed for particle analysis in 1903, it has been refined this century for optical sectioning of large biological samples.

LaVision BioTec’s Ultramicroscope utilizes a thin sheet of light to excite biological samples while the fluorescence light is detected with a CCD-equipped microscope perpendicularly to the illuminated area. By moving the sample through the sheet and taking pictures at each depth, one generates a 3D image at cellular resolution in whole organs, using fluorescent proteins, fluorescent dyes or autofluorescence!

Toptica: FemtoFErb – the most compact and cost effective laser source for THz generation

TOPTICA’s new FemtoFErb is a turnkey laser system providing 100 mW average power at 1560 nm and a pulse duration of less than 150 fs at 100 MHz repetition rate. Using the same compact platform as TOPTICA’s PicoFYb, the FemtoFErb is a robust all-fiber setup based on Erbium doped fiber and saturable absorber mirror mode-locking (SAM) technology. The compact system includes all necessary control electronics and is equipped with a direct polarization maintaining fiber output interface. The FemtoFErb is an ideal solution for Time-Domain Terahertz generation or for metrology applications allowing highest accuracy laser-based distance measurements.

Also recently released: The new FemtoFiber pro UCP provides a super-continuum between 980 – 1400 nm and more than 30 mW output power. It shows pulse durations even below 25 fs, the fastest one can get on the market from a turnkey SAM modelocked fiber laser system. The system is ideally suited for biophotonics, pump-probe experiments or fs?spectroscopy. The UCP option expands TOPTICA’s successful FemtoFiber proseries and will be live demonstrated at the forthcoming Ultrafast Phenomena conference exhibition.

The BioAnalyzer Gel offers new perspectives in Gel Electrophoresis, as no dyes are required to make the protein spots visible. The BioAnalyzer Gel utilizes native fluorescence of amino acids (tryptophane, tyrosine…) to visualize the proteins within the gel.

The outstanding advantage is of course time and cost reduction. Neither lengthy diffusion based staining processes nor covalent modifications are necessary. In addition the native fluorescence is highly quantitative. After imaging the gel can be directly processed by subsequent methods. Because of unstained proteins no purifying process is required.
