Light Conversion'sORPHEUS-F is a hybrid optical parametric amplifier of whitelight continuum pumped by femtosecond Ytterbium based laser amplifiers. This OPA combines the short pulse durations that are produced by a non-collinear OPA and wide wavelength tuning range offered by collinear version. The Signal beam can be easily compressed with a simple prism-based setup down to < 60 fs in most of the tuning range, while Idler is compressed in bulk material down to 40 fs – 90 fs depending on wavelength.

PHOTONIS Introduces a Single Photon Counting Camera

Offering a Unique Combination of High Counting, High Resolution and Fast Timing 

PHOTONIS, The Netherlands based leading electro-optic component manufacturer, announced the release of a new single photon counting camera ideal for fast imaging under light starved conditions, such as Time Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC). The camera features micrometer resolution, picosecond timing, a full 18mm wide field of view and a count rate as high as 5MHz with no added read noise.

The Imaging Photon Camera combines innovative state-of-the-art microchannel plate detector technologies and specially designed fast electronics. These components eliminate the problem of electron noise found in low-light digital sensor technologies such as EMCCD or sCMOS. The Imaging Photon Camera can provide high resolution images at extreme low light without sub-zero cooling, and connects to any microscopy or imaging device via a standard C-Mount. The exceptionally high counting rate is independent of timing and spatial resolutions.

PHOTONIS Visits Jupiter on Juno Spacecraft



The recent arrival of the Juno Spacecraft into Jupiter's orbit also means PHOTONIS is there! Scientists believe Jupiter is the first planet to form in our solar system and therefore most likely to aid in understanding of how it was formed. The Juno spacecraft is tasked with exploring the composition of Jupiter, as well as to study it's atmosphere.

PHOTONIS has supplied a number of components on the Juno mission, most notably to the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE), which features multiple microchannel plates (MCPs) configured in a Z-stack for optimum resolution. JADE is designed to study the auroras present on Jupiter, in conjunction with two other instruments on board, the JEDI and UVS.  When combined, these three instruments will provide a composition of the ions, electrons and ultraviolet emissions that are present in Jupiter's aurora. PHOTONIS has supplied MCPs to both the Ion (JADE-I) and Electron (JADE-E) sensors installed on Juno, continuing its long-standing history of supporting space exploration with superior detector technologies.

Solartron Analytical have released a new application note by Prof. Laurie Peter, (Department of Chemistry, University of Bath) entitled Studying Solar Cells with the ModuLab XM PhotoEchem Optical and Electrical Measurment System. From the note:

The ModuLab XM PhotoEchem System was developed originally for the study of dye-sensitized solar cells, but because the system is so versatile it can be applied to other types of solar cells, notably to the new generation of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide-based perovskite photovoltaics, which have achieved remarkable solar power conversion efficiencies of around 20%. The highly flexible Modulab system allows experimenters to perform a range of different measurements on solar cells or photoelectrochemical cells.

Thorlabs' Michelson Interferometer Demonstration Kit highlights several ways that an interferometer can be used to take highly sensitive measurements. A laser and LEDs allow students to explore the concept of interference and examine how the coherence length of different light sources will affect the interferometer output. The interferometer can be aligned to produce white light interference using the included white LED, as shown in the photo to the right. Students can also use the setup to determine the refractive index of Plexiglas plates and the thermal expansion coefficient of an aluminum rod.

piezosystem jena: The Piezo Gripper


The positioning or movement of fragile materials, small parts or micro systems needs actuators that are capable of precise and repeatable gripping motions without causing damage. The Piezo Gripper by piezosystem jena is an ideal system for such purposes. It can be used for manipulating micro optics (pick and place), sorting and assembling of fiber optics, precision manufacturing or handling of biological probes, among many others. 

The Piezo Gripper has a compact casing design and is able to do a grip motion of up to 300 µm. The used force of the gripper differs.  Gap width is adjustable as well making this gripper extremely flexible in use. Additionally, piezosystem jena is offering customers the possibility to completely customize the Piezo Gripper according to their specific needs and requirements.
