Giant Laser Reactor Unveiled in California

Giant Laser Reactor

A massive laser fusion reactor at the National Ignition Facility, part of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, San Francisco, was formally opened recently in front of dignitaries including California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Inside the reactor, 192 laser beams are focussed on a target the size of a bean, heating it to temperatures comparable to the interior of the sun. Read more here.

Open source PET electronics reduces time to build PET systems

SensL, manufacturers of solid-state solutions for low-light-level sensing, have announced a
a joint collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) to produce open source PET (Positron Emission Tomography) system electronics. Companies and researchers who wish to rapidly develop PET and SPECT systems can now do so with the use of an open source PET electronics specification (OpenPET).  Designers who adopt OpenPET will benefit from faster system design and a worldwide network of users who will maintain and improve the system architecture on a collaborative basis.

The system is based around a flexible PET and SPECT system architecture which has been designed for use with a variety of detector front ends. The system electronics, firmware and software will provide everything that is required to build PET and SPECT systems. Initial system design will be optimized for use with SensL's Silicon Photomultiplier, PMT replacement detector technology .

Discovery Semiconductors Introduces Quad Photodiode Arrays for 40G and 100G Optical Communications

Discovery Semiconductors, Inc has introduced its 4-element Quad InGaAs Photodiode Arrays for 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s optical communications. The Quad PD Arrays consist of four photodiodes monolithically integrated on a common InP substrate, and are fabricated using Discovery’s high-reliability low FIT rate InGaAs/InP semiconductor process. The Quad PD Array consists of either 10um, 30um, 40um, or 50um diameter photodiodes. The individual RF bandwidth of the photodiodes is 10, 15, 20, or 40 GHz. The top illuminated photodiodes work equally well for 1.3um as well as 1.5um based communication systems. The optical power handling of each photodiode exceeds +12dBm, thus making it a must for coherent systems requiring high optical LO power.  The target applications include 100 Gb/s Long-Haul Pol-Mux (D)QPSK, 40 Gb/s Long-Haul (D)QPSK, and 40G/100G parallel networking.

Signal Recovery have released the model 7270 Dual-Phase DSP Lock-In Amplifier. The model 7270 sets a new standard for general-purpose DSP lock-in amplifiers.
