Swinburne University's Professor Min Gu awarded Australian Laureate Fellowship

Lastek congratulates Professor Min Gu, Director of the Centre for Micro-Photonics at Swinburne University, Melbourne, on the announcement that he has been awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship.

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research presented the awards at a ceremony held today in Cairns.

“These 15 top-flight researchers and their teams will receive a total $35.5 million,” Senator Carr said.

“Professor Min Gu from Swinburne University of Technology will use his fellowship to research a ground-breaking petabyte data storage technology which will allow us to store the equivalent of 10,000 DVDs on one disc.

“Consistent with their high international standing, the 15 Australian Laureate Fellows will collaborate with research partners from 28 countries. This will not only make for better research outcomes; it will extend Australia’s international research connections, which are vital for our performance in the increasingly integrated global research system.”

Toptica awarded major contract for Sodium Guide Star Facility

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at Paranal, Chile, will be equipped with four cw high power Laser Guide Stars on the basis of amplified and frequency-doubled diode laser systems. Narrow band and diffraction-limited laser light sources of more than 20 W exactly on Sodium resonance at 589 nm start a new phase at the European Southern Observatory. Against strong international competitors, TOPTICA won now the final development and supply contract which foresees a deployment of the lasers at the telescope in Sept 2013.

TOPTICA, drawing on its many years of experience in the field of narrow band and tunable diode laser, has joined forces with the Canadian company MPB Communications. A combination of a novel narrow-band Raman fiber amplifier approach at 1178 nm developed by MPBC subsequently is converted to 589 nm by resonantly enhanced frequency-doubling technology. Based on TOPTICA’s scientific product series, conversion efficiencies of more than 80 % have been demonstrated.

Discovery Semiconductor showcase Highly Linear Photodiode Instrument

Discovery Semiconductors Inc., a leading supplier of optical receivers, test instruments and sub-systems, showcased its new Highly Linear Photodiode (HLPD®) Lab Buddy instrument at the recent CLEO/QELS conference in San Jose, CA.

The HLPD® instrument consolidates several years of Discovery’s pioneering work in highly linear photodiode technology.  It combines linear photodiode performance at > 1.5V RF output and 22 GHz of bandwidth with temperature stabilization. Mr. Abhay Joshi, President & CEO of Discovery Semiconductors explained, “As we have progressed towards unprecedented levels of power handling and linearity in photodiodes, stabilizing the device temperature has become essential for reliable performance and even higher linearity.”

Mr. Dan Mohr, Discovery’s Senior Engineer added, “This instrument was developed to deploy Discovery’s HLPD® technology in a flexible laboratory instrument for upcoming applications such as precision photonic oscillators, as well as a characterization standard for a myriad of optoelectronic components.” The new Lab Buddy incorporates front panel controls as well as a remote computer interface to allow seamless integration into various automated test setups.

Ocean Optics Contributes to Gulf Air Quality Monitoring in Wake of Deepwater Horizon Spill

HR2000 used in Argos portable UV DOAS air monitoring system
Dunedin, Florida (June 14, 2010) – Modular HR2000 spectrometers from Ocean Optics are enabling air quality monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico as part of Argos Scientific’s portable UV DOAS air monitoring system.  Argos Scientific is working in conjunction with Hillsborough County, Florida, to monitor the environmental impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The project has special significance to Ocean Optics as the company is located on the Gulf side of Florida and its community will be affected in coming months as the oil advances, upsetting both water and air quality.
